Oral Cancer Screening

Nearly every hour of every day one American dies from oral cancer. The death rate of oral cancer is higher than most other cancers we hear  — its mortality rate has sadly not improved in decades.

Despite the popular belief that oral cancer only occurs in smokers, alcohol drinkers, and tobacco chewers, there has been a rise of oral cancer incidence amongst people in younger age groups who have never used tobacco products. Recent research has shown a strong link to human papilloma virus, (HPV), which is sexually transmitted.

Like all cancers, early detection of oral cancer is key and has been associated with survival rates of 80-90%, compared to a late detection survival rate of only 43% at 5 years from diagnosis.

We have incorporated an FDA approved VELscope-based lesion detection device called Sapphire-LD that has high specificity for identifying early pre-cancerous or cancerous cells that may go unnoticed with the naked eye. This tool is able to detect abnormal changes below the surface in an earlier stage, and to help save lives.

The affordably-priced procedure is painless and only adds 1-2 minutes to the routine examination. Our patients are grateful that we have invested in this technology that allows us to detect potential problems earlier, and to provide the best health care currently available.
